Overview

The Central Academy of Fine Arts is a public specialist art academy in Beijing administered by China’s Ministry of Education. Its academic organisation encompasses Chinese painting, calligraphy, oil painting, printmaking, sculpture, mural painting, design, architecture, humanities, art management, conservation and experimental artistic practice. Its postgraduate education brings studio work, art history and theory, design research and professional practice into an institution with dedicated academic schools, museums and research resources.

The academy publishes separate foreign-applicant admissions materials for academic and professional Master’s degrees, doctoral study and university preparation. The 2026 graduate catalogues distinguish degree subjects, colleges and supervisor research directions; applicants undergo a professional portfolio or academic-material review, with language and prior-qualification requirements depending on the route. A current spring 2027 foundation call offers preparatory art study on the Wangjing main campus. Graduate tuition is charged annually, while the short foundation course has a separate full-course charge; degree housing and preparatory housing availability are described differently in their respective notices.
