Overview

Founded in 1928, China Academy of Art is one of China’s leading institutions for visual art, design and cultural research. Its main campuses in Hangzhou include Nanshan, Xiangshan, Liangzhu and Xianghu, placing students within a major centre of Chinese artistic heritage and contemporary creative practice. The academy combines studio instruction and scholarly inquiry across Chinese painting and calligraphy, fine art, sculpture, architecture, design, film, animation and new media.

International students can enter degree study at bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels through the academy’s dedicated application system. Its 2026 admissions catalogs describe individual studio and research directions, including Chinese-language programs and five English-taught doctoral directions in design. Portfolio or research-plan review, language evidence and an interview are central to selection; the specific degree guide and direction catalog should be checked for each applicant’s requirements and published deadline.
