Overview

Ningbo University (NBU) is a major public university in Zhejiang, China, supported by the provincial government, China’s Ministry of Education, and local authorities. Founded in 1986 with donations from Hong Kong entrepreneur Sir Yue-Kong Pao, it received symbolic backing from leaders such as Deng Xiaoping, who inscribed its name, and Xi Jinping, who encouraged its development into a first-class institution. Over time, NBU expanded through mergers and government support, becoming part of China’s “Double First-Class” initiative. Today, it is a comprehensive teaching and research university ranked among the top 100 in China, offering a wide range of disciplines and advanced degree programs, with several fields ranked in the global top 1% according to ESI.
