Overview

Southwest Minzu University is a comprehensive public university in Chengdu affiliated with the National Ethnic Affairs Commission and jointly supported by the commission, the Ministry of Education, Sichuan Province and Chengdu Municipality. Established in 1951 as Southwest Minzu College and renamed in 2003, it combines humanities and social sciences with science, engineering, agriculture, medicine and the arts. Its facilities include the Wuhou, Hangkonggang and Taipingyuan campuses in Chengdu and a plateau ecology and animal-husbandry research base in Hongyuan County. The university supports undergraduate and postgraduate education through 24 schools and a research structure that includes doctoral programs and postdoctoral research stations.

The international degree admissions catalog identifies undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs rather than opening every domestic major to overseas applicants. Chinese is the principal teaching language, while specified foreign-language master’s programs use Chinese together with English, Japanese, French or Korean. Applicants submit their materials through the international student platform and undergo academic assessment after document review. University and Chengdu municipal scholarship routes are competitive and have separate award conditions. International students must purchase the required medical insurance; housing is offered in single, double and four-bed rooms with monthly charges, so accommodation is retained on its published monthly basis.
