Overview

University of Chinese Academy of Sciences was founded in 1978 as the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which was described as the first graduate school in China, and it was renamed UCAS in 2012. The university is administered by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and is built around an integration of research and education model. UCAS ranks 5th among global universities in the 2026 Nature Index and 1st in Chinese mainland and 10th worldwide in the latest Essential Science Indicators university rankings. It operates through four campuses in Beijing, five education centers outside Beijing, and more than 110 CAS institutes across China. Its international student community includes 1,281 doctoral candidates and 529 master’s candidates, and the university says international students have been admitted since 2004. UCAS says it is deeply integrated with CAS research institutes, observatories, and centers, and lists major research platforms including 25 large research infrastructures, 2 national research centers, 100 state key laboratories, and 39 national engineering research centers and laboratories. Undergraduate education began in 2014, while the university’s admission scope for international students spans over 20 UCAS faculties and over 100 CAS institutes. UCAS’s academic range for international students includes philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and interdisciplinary science. The university also highlights cooperation with leading universities and research institutions worldwide.
