Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts

Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts was founded in 1949 and is one of China’s established specialist art academies. Its work spans Chinese painting, oil painting, printmaking, sculpture, calligraphy, design, media arts and art history. Located in Xi’an, the academy draws on the city’s long artistic and archaeological heritage while supporting contemporary studio practice, research and public-facing creative work.

For 2026 the academy opens all 27 undergraduate majors to foreign students and publishes separate Chinese-taught master’s and doctoral admissions notices. The master’s intake names 51 supervisors across 12 departments, with research directions ranging from landscape painting and sculpture to sustainable design, digital media and art management. Applicants submit a portfolio or academic writing as appropriate to their route; the academy also operates four distinct international-student scholarship categories.
