A good introduction begins before you press a button. Something in a person’s profile has made you think a conversation could be worthwhile: an interest, a study experience or a shared university connection. Take a moment to identify that reason. It will help you make a thoughtful request and give you a natural opening if the person accepts.
Connect handles the introduction and contact-sharing decision. The request flow asks you which methods you are willing to share with that person after acceptance; the conversation itself continues in an external service.
Read the profile with a real conversation in mind
Open the profile from discovery and read the bio, photos and any approved university context. Look for a specific interest you could discuss. You are deciding whether to introduce yourself, not collecting a list of people to contact later.
Imagine that your bio mentions learning to code and another student describes a small software project. That gives you a plausible conversation topic. It does not establish that they want to tutor you, review your work or join a project, so begin with curiosity rather than a large request.
Check that your own profile gives the recipient enough context to make their decision. The introduction flow does not provide an in-app message composer. A clear bio does much of the work of explaining why you might be interested in meeting another student.
Prepare the contact method you want to use
When you choose Request introduction, you need an available private contact method. Connect supports WhatsApp, WeChat, Instagram and Telegram. If you have not added one, follow the prompt to the Contact vault, save the relevant number or handle, and return to the introduction.
Check the details carefully, including the account you intend to use for student conversations. Saving a contact method does not send the request. The vault screen makes that separation explicit, allowing you to prepare the method before deciding what to share.
You may keep more than one supported method available, but you do not have to offer all of them to each person. Choose a channel you check and feel comfortable using with a new connection.
Make the sharing choice for this person
The consent sheet identifies the person and lists your available contact methods. Nothing is selected by default. Select at least one method, review the selection and press Send introduction request when you are ready.
Those selected methods become available to the recipient only if they accept. The recipient separately chooses which of their methods to share with you. Selecting several of your own methods is not a request that the other person provide the same set in return.
For example, a student might keep both WhatsApp and Telegram in the vault but select only Telegram for a particular introduction. Their unselected WhatsApp method is not included in that exchange. This is a per-person decision, so review it each time instead of treating a previous choice as a default.
Let the recipient make their decision
Open Introductions to review the request in Sent. A pending request is waiting for the other person’s response; it is not a conversation or a commitment. They may accept, ignore it or leave it unanswered until it is no longer active.
Give the request space. Repeated attempts to reach someone through different routes rarely improve a first impression. If a request is unavailable or Connect shows an allowance message, follow the current screen rather than assuming another request was sent.
Basic has a monthly outgoing-introduction allowance. Core and Pro offer expanded Connect. Daily, pending-request and safety controls still apply. A small number of relevant introductions can be more manageable than more conversations than you have time to continue.
After acceptance, open the available shared contact and start with a brief reminder of where you connected and the interest that caught your attention. Explore IMS Hub on mobile to make your first introduction with a deliberate sharing choice.
