Your availability for new connections will change. You might want to focus on exams, settle into a routine or take a break after a busy week. Connect gives you separate choices for nearby discovery, university-community participation and contact sharing, so a pause can match what you actually want to change.

Start by naming the purpose of the pause. Are you finished with today’s nearby session? Would you also like to leave university-community discovery? Do you want existing contacts to keep the methods you previously shared? Each answer points to a different control.

End the nearby session from its status card

When a nearby session is active, Connect shows a card with the time remaining. Use its eye-off control, labelled Go invisible for accessibility, to end that live session. Wait for the app to finish the action and confirm the updated state.

The session can last up to 24 hours, but you can end it earlier. Using the explicit control is helpful when you know you are done. Do not treat closing the screen or seeing an old saved status as confirmation that a visibility change has completed.

If the device is offline or still checking its connection, the app may keep actions unavailable. Reconnect and review the result before assuming the change has taken effect. This is especially useful when you leave discovery immediately after requesting the change.

Review university-community discovery separately

Ending a nearby session does not turn off the separate university-community preference. That route is based on approved affiliation and opt-in, and can include people connected to the same institution across locations.

To review it, open your Connect profile’s edit menu, choose Profile, identity & discovery, and open the academic-status settings under University status. The Include my university community switch controls participation in that discovery route.

The nearby session and university preference can serve different intentions. For example, a student might end nearby discovery during an exam week but keep their approved university community included. Another might turn off both because they are not looking for new introductions. Either choice should be deliberate.

The separate Show institution on my profile preference controls the displayed affiliation. Read the label before changing it: displaying university context and participating in university-community discovery are different decisions.

Decide what existing contacts should retain

Finishing a live session does not, by itself, revoke contact methods already shared through accepted introductions. Those sharing choices continue until changed or otherwise made unavailable under the app’s controls.

If you want to adjust one connection, open it and use Manage sharing. Keep selected only the methods you want that person to access, then save. Clear every method and choose Revoke access if you want to stop future in-app access for that connection.

For a broader change, your own profile’s Privacy & safety area includes contact controls and, when applicable, Stop all contact sharing. That action withdraws future in-app contact access across connections. Previously copied information remains outside what IMS can recall, so choose the scope that matches your intention.

Return when you have room for new introductions

Before starting another nearby session, take a moment to review your bio and any contact details you plan to share. A short update can make your availability clearer, such as describing the interests you currently have time to discuss.

When ready, return to Connect and press and hold Connect until the progress completes. Follow the foreground-location prompt and check the new session status. If you previously turned off university-community participation, review that preference separately when you want to take part again.

Explore IMS Hub on mobile and keep discovery at a pace that works alongside your studies, rather than feeling that a profile must always be available.
